PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge wireless controller

DualSense or DualSense Edge: which PS5 controller is right for you?

, by la3eb, 1 min reading time

The standard DualSense suits most players. The Edge adds back buttons, trigger stops and replaceable sticks for competitive play.

Every PS5 comes with a DualSense, and for most people a second one is all they need. The DualSense Edge is Sony's pro controller: the same feel, with extra controls you can tune to the game.

DualSense

The DualSense is where PS5 games get their feel. Haptic feedback lets you sense surfaces and impacts, and the adaptive triggers add resistance, such as the pull of a bowstring or a brake pedal. It has a built-in microphone, a headset jack and charges over USB-C. It also comes in a range of colours and limited editions.

DualSense Edge

The DualSense Edge keeps all of that and adds:

  • Two back buttons you can map to any input, so your thumbs stay on the sticks
  • Trigger stops with three lengths, for faster shots in shooters
  • Stick modules you can replace if one wears out
  • Custom profiles for stick sensitivity and button layout, switched from the controller
  • A carrying case and a braided USB cable in the box

The trade-off is battery life, which is shorter than on the standard DualSense.

Which should you buy?

  • DualSense: a second controller for the sofa, story games, sports and racing.
  • DualSense Edge: competitive shooters and anyone who wants back buttons and tuning.
  • Something modular: the Pro BFG controller is an alternative with swappable modules and back paddles.
